Foggo & Thomas

Peter Foggo (1930-1993) and David Thomas set up practice in 1959 after studying architecture together in Liverpool. They shared a passion for the work of Mies van der Rohe, and even once persuaded the legendary architect to travel to Merseyside to give a talk to students. Between 1959 and 1965 they designed a number of private houses as Peter Foggo David Thomas Architects, which are among the few buildings in Britain that stand comparison with the celebrated Case-Study houses built in California. Since they both had full-time jobs, the practice operated between 8pm and midnight on weekdays as well as weekends. Their first complete house was commissioned in 1959 via Kenneth Capon of Architects’ Co-Partnership – the practice where Foggo was working at the time. Subsequently both architects became directors of Arup Associates, and Foggo in particular became known for the 1985 Postmodern Broadgate development in London.
